In horticultural/agricultural/hydroponic applications, vermiculite and perlite are used throughout the world as components of soilless growing mixes as they are able to provide optimum moisture and aeration of the mix respectively, thus allowing for superior plant growth. In some instances for rooting cuttings, 100% Perlite is used.
Studies have shown that outstanding yields are achieved with vermiculite hydroponic systems. Other benefits of horticultural vermiculite are its neutral pH and the fact that it is virtually sterile and weed-free. In addition, its light weight makes it ideal for use in container growing.
Other horticultural applications for Vermiculite are as a carrier for fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides and for pelletizing seed. Horticultural Vermiculite is as useful to the home gardener as it is to the commercial grower. It is used with equal success in greenhouse growing, landscaping applications and in the home in house plants.
It is a well-known fact that plants need sunlight, air, moisture, warmth and nutrients at their roots to encourage fast, healthy growth. The unique structure of Vermiculite increases aeration in composts, holds water and helps to distribute nutrients evenly throughout the root zone. LAF’s vermiculite, produced from a mineral mined in Australia or continental Africa, is heated to 1000 °C in our furnace where it expands. Water and nutrients in solution are taken up rapidly by the Vermiculite particles and are readily available to the growing roots.
Exfoliated Vermiculite in growing composts provides texture and breaks up its structure, increases aeration as well as drainage. Less frequent watering is required and water is retained longer in the compost. Clean to handle, odourless, non-irritant and free from weed, seeds, pests and diseases at time of manufacture. Vermiculite is lightweight and has a near neutral pH.
